LOCATION

Rijeka,Croatia

RE:EASA will take place in Rijeka. It is the main port city and the third largest city in Croatia. It stretches between a river and the sea, between hills and the shore. Its turbulent past, unique location and a sudden rise of industry have shaped it into a city of contradictions and diversity. The city is defined not only by seafaring and industry, but also by a lively subcultural scene. Having given birth to the first punk and rock scene in this part of Europe, Rijeka has been a prominent site for alternative culture since the fifties. The city is a collage of many landscapes, ancient and new settlements, different nations, subcultures and religions. However, Rijeka’s sudden industrial bloom was followed by a slow decay and financial collapse, leaving behind an industrial harbour complex that divides the city and separates it from the sea. Our intention is to REpurpose and REvive these spaces. The area around the river’s delta in the very centre of the city, with its abandoned complexes and factories will be the location where most of the lectures, parties and communal life of RE:EASA will be taking place.

We are digging into new dimensions of usefulness in order to find value, meaning and potential in the endless amounts of waste, in all its forms: wasted material, abandoned spaces, wasted time. Architects need to reconsider their role and attitude in this hyperproduced reality – to reshape themselves into those who can embrace the existing and face the challenge of achieving continuities. The world needs to build upon itself, from its own waste, its own mistakes, its lessons and its own abandoned potential, rather than to constantly produce the new. It needs to recreate. RE is born here.

THEME

RE:

prefix, from Latin, used with the meaning ‘again’, ‘back’.

‘RE:’ means acknowledging the existed or existing. ‘RE:’ is dealing with the past or present to sort things out for the future. ‘RE:’ is aware of the circular nature of reality and interconnection of things. ‘RE’ establishes a new and different kind of order or value.

THERE IS NO AESTHETICS WITHOUT ETHICS.

Architects should, naturally, put an emphasis on the socially, economically and environmentally sensitive attitude and its priority in design. However, we must acknowledge that each time and space had their own understanding of these terms – we aim to examine ours.

WE DON’T BELIEVE IN TRASH.

WHERE IS THE LINE BETWEEN NEEDS AND LUXURIES?

We are, firstly, humans. Then, we are architects or else. Therefore, we are stepping from the professional domain back into the personal sphere, asking ourselves where we draw the line between what we need and what is a luxury. When should we renounce and when should we struggle for more?
